  2. Clarity: You don’t need a flawless diamond for it to look crystal clear to the naked eye, anything from VS2 or above will guarantee a winner that has no visible blemishes or inclusions.
  3. Carat: As you go up in carat, diamonds jump in price so pick ones just below the jumps. Example: a 0.92ct diamond may have similar measurements to the 1.0ct that you have your eye on (they look the same!) but could save you up to 25%!
  4. Certification: Only buy a certified diamond. You wouldn’t buy a car without looking at its documents and this is definitely the case for diamonds. You want to know the diamond is exactly what you’re paying for so ensure you get a full certificate to accompany your purchase.
  5. Contour (Shape): Round Brilliant cuts are the most popular as they have the most life and sparkle, however, some shapes like ovals, pears and marquise offer better size per carat weight (making the diamond look bigger and more expensive!)
  6. Cut: A diamond cut refers to how sparkly it is – there’s no point in having a diamond if it doesn’t sparkle, all diamonds are graded from Excellent to Poor for their cut. To ensure the diamond sparkles, go with an “Excellent” or “Very Good” cut.

New Type of Diamond in Frozen Lava

Russian Geologists, backed by the country’s Ministry of Science, are celebrating the discovery of a new type of diamond, RT.com reports. The diamonds were discovered in the frozen lava of the Tolbachik volcano complex in Kamchatka, in the country’s Far East. “The solidified lava of the Tolbachik eruption [in 2012-2013] carries within it a new and never-before-seen type of diamond”, the Russian Ministry of Science announced, “they were named – Tolbachik diamonds”. The new diamonds were formed by volcanic gases under pressure and are a result of crystallization “under the influence of electrical discharges of lightning”, according to geologists.

Argonne Researchers Develop Two New Diamond Inventions

ARGONNE, IL – Researchers at the US Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory have continued their research into advanced ultrananocrystalline diamond technologies and have developed two new applications for this special material. Ultrananocrystalline diamond (UNCD) thin films have shown a great deal of promise in the semiconductor and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) industries. Recently, a team led by Argonne nanoscientistAniSumant at Argonne’s Center for Nanoscale Materials (CNM) demonstrated the extraordinary piezoresistive properties of boron-doped ultrananocrystalline diamond, when it is fabricated at the nanoscale. Piezoresistivity measures the change in a material’s electrical resistance as a function of applied mechanical strain. Argonne researchers are also investigating adding nanodiamond particles to the cathode of lithium-ion batteries in combination with other carbon materials in order to improve the thermal conductivity of the material. This improves the ability to remove heat from the battery system. “Getting heat out of the battery is tremendously important for hybrid and electric vehicles,” Alberth said.
